Major Responsibilities:

  • Prepares intravenous (IV) drugs using aseptic technique in compounding parenteral nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapy and other IV drugs.
  • Maintains required documentation in accordance with regulatory and hospital requirements and maintains respect for patient confidentiality.  Generates necessary pharmacy reports.
  • Performs all major responsibilities of an Inpatient Pharmacy Technician I.
  • Complies with all state and federal standards for compounding medications.
  • Prepare sterile parenteral products from a patient order including additive, volume and concentration.  Prepares adult, pediatric, neonatal parenteral nutrition.
  • Prepare batch preparations of sterile compounded products for high use items.
  • Maintain inventory and supplies needed for sterile compounding and order supplies for IV area.
  • Maintain standards for certification in aseptic technique.
  • Proficient with all pharmacy technology and equipment and proper use of all compounding systems.
  • Document compounded products using appropriate technology (Simplify, Epic, IMS, etc).
  • Support training new technicians in sterile compounding and other specialized tasks.
  • Monthly air and surface sampling, as appropriate.
  • Demonstrates appropriate behavior in ISO classified environments (handwashing, garbing, aseptic technique).
  • Temperature/humidity monitoring (room air, refrigerators, freezers, incubators) and associated documentation.
  • Pressure monitoring and documentation.
  • Proper use and maintenance of Primary Engineering Controls.
  • Perform inspections of area and removes outdated medications and supplies.
  • Assists with yearly inventory in assigned areas.

  • Demonstrates use of Quality Improvement in daily operations.
  • Complies with all health and safety regulations and requirements.
  • Maintains respect for patient confidentiality.
  • Maintains, regular, reliable, and predictable attendance.
  • Performs other similar and related duties as required or directed.
  • Ensure that all required licenses and certification are up to date and are current.
  • Respects diverse views and approaches, demonstrates Standards of Respect, and contributes to creating and maintaining an environment of professionalism, tolerance, civility, and acceptance toward all employees, patients, and visitors.

Position Qualifications:


License/Certification/Education:

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.  
  • Current license with the Massachusetts Board of Pharmacy.
  • Certified by one of the national governing bodies such as Pharmacy Technician Certification Board PTCB, or the National Healthcareer Association ExCPT.
  • Maintains advanced pharmacy technician certification for IV compounding.

Experience/Skills:

Required:

  • 3 years of previous experience.
  • Position requires proficiency in math and, knowledge and ability to use a computer.  
  • Must be able to follow oral and written instructions with accuracy, efficiency, and dependability.  
  • Positive work ethic, motivated and professional demeanor to promote teamwork in the department.

Every other weekend and every other holiday.
